About the Space Science Group
The Space Science Group at Northwestern State University is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping Louisiana's students excel in the areas of science and mathematics. To achieve this goal, the Space Science Group is actively involved in the development and implementation of educational programs that utilize aspects of NASA's space program to motivate students in their studies.
These programs include Practice Run, an online testing program designed to help students prepare for the math and science sections of the LEAP 21 and GEE 21 standardized tests; Science: Out of this World In the Classroom, a free program designed for middle school students (grades 5-8) that uses the study of space and technology, combined with fun experiments and activities, to motivate students to learn basic scientific methods and principles, as well as general study skills; Science: Out of this World Online, an extensive web-site that supplements existing science courses by providing over a thousand content pages that teachers can organize into guided visits for their students; The Black Hole Science Laboratory, a one-of-a-kind facility that is available to Louisiana students, grades 5-8, for day-long field trips where students will experience the fun and wonder of learning science; and What's Up in Space, a fun space website with interactive current events articles, space games, and daily science factoids.
The Space Science Group also sponsors an annual Space Art contest, and travels to area schools to engage students' imaginations with an exciting, interactive Science Show, performed by Mrs. Jessica Odom and Mrs. Georgia Hilton.
